From an outpost for the Hudson's Bay Company in 1850 to a gateway for European
settlers in 1860 and onto the hotbed of tourism it is today, Cowichan Bay is full
of history, culture and creative spirit. Located on the southeastern end of Vancouver
Island, this scenic coastal village is very small in size yet features a great
variety of Victorian buildings, a busy harbour filled with all manner of vessel
and a colorful community spirit. Popular activities in the area range from kayaking
and fishing to sailing
tours and wine tasting. While in town, visitors can play a match of tennis
at the world's second oldest active lawn
court or checkout the exhibits at the Cowichan
Bay Maritime Centre. Next door from the Centre, the Wooden Boat Society is
always busy restoring a variety of heritage boats, open for the public to see.
Down on Cowichan Bay Road, tourists and locals alike stroll along the waterside
walkway by Hecate Park, taking in a view of the marina and enjoying the restaurants,
galleries,
and one-of-a-kind shops
found there.
